In a world once all but destroyed by man and returned to an age of medieval technology, people lived on. Many died with the struggle to live from one day to the next, and as creatures previously unknown appeared the number of survivors was cut down to nearly nothing. But like a virus, people adapted and survived through even this and they too changed when they reawakened their latent abilities, magic within all of them.
Back at the top of the food chain they found themselves regaining a semblance of civilization and the future looked as if it might one day return to what the past had once been until two of the leaders began to fight with one another about what to do to best preserve and advance life for the remaining people. One leader, a man by the name of Ander, thought they should take what was now ancient technology and figure out how to make it work and then enhance it with their magic. The other leader, a woman by the name of Lyddie, thought they should use their gifts to create new technology since the ancients had nearly destroyed the world with their technology.
The people split and each followed one of the leaders and after generations they had taken on their names to identify themselves. The Anders eventually managed to scavenge enough technologies that they were able to build massive flying fortresses held up merely by the passive magic of the people. The Lydians worked the land and slowly advanced their technology until they could produce crops in quantities previously unimaginable and have cities that were nearly impenetrable to outside attack from the ever increasing variety of creatures.
Their hate for one another never lessened, but they each had next to no way of getting to the others and had locked themselves into a futile war. Eventually, the Anders created a weapon of incredible power that allowed them to blast through the impressive defenses created by the Lydians. they were able to use ther magicked technology to enhance their power and use the floating city as an energy source and attack platform.
The Lydians couldn't come up with a defense that would stop the Anders that wouldn't destroy them as well until they found that their technology allowed them to nullify magic in a localized area. In many different areas they built three towers around their magical devices that nullified magic that amplified the effects straight up in the air and then used their magic with crops to have the ground swallow the towers until the Ander's floating cities were above them.
In one swift movement the Lydians unearthered their towers and activated the towers. rendering the magic moving the cities inert, though the rest of the Ander's magic was not affected. The floating cities lurched to a halt unable to move by magic. Unable to fly close to the Lydian's cities, they could no longer their weapon to break the Lydian's defenses once again leveling the battlefield.
After half a century one of the floating cities suddenly began using their weapon again, only the range and power had increased expotentially removing their need to be close to the Lydian's cities. For two years this one city became the focal point of terror for the Lydians, and then the Anders came with weapons of incredible power that seemed to defy what was known about weapons.
Then it abrubtly stopped after a bright column of light erupted from the floating city and it all but vaporized, taking the towers holding it with it. At its base were two incredibly injured people, whether Ander or Lydian was unknown, only that they had somehow caused the floating city to be destoyed. They were taken by the Lydians to their closest city to be healed. Now, with the new threat stopped, the Lydians fear other floating cities will figure out how the fallen city had managed to amplify their weapon and resume the terror they had faced. Now, man rushes to face its greatest enemy once again, itself.
